Prison Library Projects

There is no limit to what you can do when you work in a prison library. You only need the drive, the imagination, and the willingness not to give up when the prison adminsitration toss roadblocks. Mary Stevanus, our librarian at MCIH has been an energetic program implementer in the library. Recent news of a Veteran's project she initiated was in the local newspaper, The Herald

Mary Stevanus has shown remarkable insight into the needs of her patrons, what fine work that is!

Hello, my name is Amanda Bosky and I am a University of South Florida student working towards my masters in library sci. For my Librarianship and Human Rights course I created a page for the Library Best Practices wiki on prison librarianship/outreach. It is merely a literature review--I have no experience in this area. I have gotten my grade so I wanted to start opening the page up to other people and making them aware of it. Feel free to add, subtract, etc. if you feel so moved, and let others know about the page if you like. I think prison librarianship is a very worthwhile, very underpublicized aspect of the career, and needs more attention.

I have worked in academic libraries for 20 years. Prison librarianship has peaked my interest but I have had a hard time finding much info. about prison libraries here in TX. Do you have any contact info. for any prison librarians in Texas? Thanks.

I'm working on obtaining a Grant to implement counseling for Iraq/Afghanistan veterans caught in the criminal justice system. My son was put in jail and I was able to apply pressure to put him in treatment and he has lived a great life for the last few years. I want to help other veterans. Is the project Mary started still going? Or does anyone know how to reach her?

Thanks

The library where the project is conducted is at the Maryland Correctional Instution at Hagerstown. You can get information on that prison from the DPSCS site on the Internet
