In May, I had opportunity to share my prison library knowledge and experience with prison librarians from Oklahoma. During the two day workshop, organized by Judy Tirey of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries we discussed issues facing prison librarians- dealing with the increasing number of gangs coming into the prisons, budget constraints, being one person managers, identifying funding sources, and working in a prison environment. Librarians said the workshop was helpful because issues discussed were relevant to their day to day working experience.
Prison librarians provide information that meets the information, recreational, lifelong learning, and transitional needs of prisoners, preparing them to be successful ex offenders.
